Discover Amato’S Pizza & Pasta

If you’re cruising along Durham Road in Madison and suddenly crave a slice of something comforting, Amato’S Pizza & Pasta at 391 Durham Rd, Madison, CT 06443, United States, feels like the kind of place locals almost want to keep secret. I first stopped in on a rainy Friday evening after a long week, expecting a quick takeout order. Instead, I ended up staying for dinner, chatting with the staff, and watching trays of bubbling mozzarella glide out of the kitchen.

The menu leans heavily into Italian-American classics-thin-crust pizza, baked ziti, chicken parmigiana, hearty grinders, and crisp salads. What stands out is how consistent everything tastes. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners consistently rank food quality and consistency as top factors when choosing where to eat. That tracks here. On my second visit, I ordered the same pepperoni and mushroom pie I’d had weeks earlier, just to test it. Same golden crust, same balanced tomato sauce, same generous but not overwhelming layer of cheese.

The pizza dough has that slight chew and char you expect from a well-managed oven. When I asked about it, one of the staff members explained they let the dough rest before stretching it. That resting process allows gluten to relax, creating a crust that’s airy inside but crisp outside. It’s a simple method, but it’s one that serious pizzaiolos swear by. The result? Slices that fold without collapsing and hold their toppings without sliding off.

Beyond pizza, the pasta dishes deserve attention. The baked lasagna arrives steaming, layered with ricotta, seasoned beef, and a house-made marinara that tastes bright rather than sugary. The chicken Alfredo is rich without feeling heavy, and portions are generous enough to guarantee leftovers. In fact, on a recent family gathering, we ordered a tray of penne alla vodka for the table. It fed five adults comfortably, which says something about value as well as portion control.

Online reviews often mention the friendly service, and that’s been my experience too. During one visit, I watched the staff handle a packed dining room and a steady stream of takeout orders without missing a beat. Orders were double-checked before leaving the counter, and special requests-like extra sauce or light cheese-were handled without hesitation. That attention to detail builds trust, especially in a small-town setting where word-of-mouth matters.

The location on Durham Road makes it convenient whether you’re a Madison local or passing through from nearby shoreline towns. Parking is straightforward, and the casual dining room feels welcoming rather than flashy. You’ll see families with kids, high school students grabbing slices after practice, and couples splitting a large pie. It’s the kind of environment where nobody rushes you out the door.

From a broader perspective, pizza remains one of America’s most popular foods. A 2023 survey by YouGov ranked pizza among the top comfort foods nationwide. What separates an average pizzeria from a reliable favorite is execution. Here, ingredients taste fresh, the sauce has depth, and the cheese melts evenly across every slice. Even the grinders-stuffed with cold cuts, lettuce, tomato, and a drizzle of oil-feel thoughtfully assembled instead of hastily thrown together.

Of course, like any neighborhood spot, peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends. Calling ahead for takeout helps. While I can’t verify every ingredient source, the flavor and texture suggest a focus on quality and freshness. Prices align with other Connecticut pizzerias, making it accessible for regular visits rather than just special occasions.

If you’re scanning menus in Madison and looking for a dependable Italian restaurant that balances flavor, portion size, and hospitality, this address on Durham Road delivers exactly that. Between the steady stream of positive reviews, the well-executed menu staples, and the relaxed atmosphere, it earns its place as a local go-to for pizza nights, pasta cravings, and everything in between.

  • By far the best Pizza in this area. I had the margarita pie. It was delicious with a thin crispy crust, great sauce and cheese. Highly recommend.

  • Amato’s has the best pizza outside of New Haven, in my opinion! I enjoy watching the One Bite videos and have tried all the spots around Madison, and this one is my absolute favorite. I often mix it up and order a different pie each time I order from here and it’s always delicious. My wife often orders the tomato and fresh garlic pie on a gluten free crust which may produce the best aroma of any pizza in the world! I highly recommend Amato’s if you want a delicious and consistent pizza experience.

  • Nice guy runs this place. I’m happy they’re still in business. It’s not far off I-95, and it’s great not having to get off in New Haven. If you’re driving from Boston to NYC, this is a perfect place to stop. This photo was taken in 2018, just after they opened. The pizza was a little heavy on the cheese, but other than that it great.

  • I'm from Virginia and with this being my first Connecticut pizza, I was impressed. I love the thin crust and the flavor of the sauce was so good! I liked that you picked up your to go food at the window and didn't have to go inside.

  • Took a ride up here with my wife on my motorcycle unaware how fast they sell out of pizza on a Friday night. They were super accommodating and snuck one in for us. Great food and great people!!! If you’re coming or ordering on a Friday/Saturday call ahead unlike I did. 5 stars.
